In recognition of its environmental and sustainability efforts, Prime Infra subsidiary Ahunan Power, Inc. bagged the Best Sustainable Infrastructure & Environmental Stewardship in Energy Sector (Philippines) award at the World Business Outlook Awards 2025.
The awards are conferred by Singapore-based print and online publication World Business Outlook to business and finance sector leaders who exhibit “industry excellence, exceptional leadership, outstanding success strategies, and global presence.”
Ahunan is investing $5.03 billion in developing the Pakil pumped storage Project in Pakil, Laguna. With a generating output capacity of 1,400 megawatts, it is poised to become one of the largest facilities of its kind in Asia.
The Pakil project integrates variable renewable energy to provide mid-merit energy during peak periods and address the ancillary services requirements of the grid. It is expected to provide power to more than 2.3 million households, and will displace around 3.1 million tons of coal a year.
Further to its sustainability commitment, Ahunan’s approach to renewable energy development is geared towards protecting and preserving vital ecosystems, such as watersheds. In August this year, Ahunan mapped out an Php80-million Integrated Watershed Management Plan for watershed and forest conservation, watershed protection and water management.
The comprehensive plan, developed through extensive stakeholder consultations and will be implemented in close coordination with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), outlines strategies to sustainably manage the Pakil River Watershed. This watershed covers a portion of the Pasig-Marikina-Laguna de Bay River Basin and the Malaking Ilog-Tibag watershed.
Ahunan also launched a green initiative focused on promoting environmental sustainability while strengthening ties with the local community. As of date, more than 11,000 saplings of fruit-bearing and forest trees are housed in a temporary nursery which will serve as a staging area and will be part of a broader initiative to reforest areas across the country.
Recognizing the importance of community partnerships where it operates, Ahunan in June 2022, launched Tayo Na Pakil, implementing various social initiatives geared toward fostering inclusive growth among community members. It focuses on projects and activities that would be most helpful to its stakeholders such as education, livelihood, emergency response, capacity building, and environmental protection.
More than three years later, Tayo na Pakil continues its community-centered, socially inclusive approach to creating positive impact for Pakil residents, expanding its focus to include economic empowerment, disaster preparedness, health, and youth development.
Through strategic partnerships with local government units and the community, the Tayo Na Pakil is designed to address the most pressing needs of Pakil residents. The initiatives under the program are in synergy to create sustainable pathways for growth and resilience across different sectors of the community.
PAKILight Women Candlemakers supports women entrepreneurs by providing training on paper bag and candle making, and educating them about product creation and business model development.
